You wash your workout clothes, take them out of the machine, and they seem perfectly clean. Then you put them on for a run, a gym session, or even a walk, and that familiar sweat smell is back. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Activewear is designed to handle moisture, but that also means it can trap sweat and body oils deep inside the fabric.

But, you don’t need a special detergent or an expensive laundry product to fix it. Laundry professionals say one simple step before washing can make a noticeable difference and help your favorite leggings, T-shirts, and sports bras stay fresher for longer.

Why Your Workout Clothes Still Smell After Washing

Unlike cotton, most workout clothes are made from synthetic fabrics like polyester or nylon. These materials are great at pulling sweat away from your skin, but they’re also good at holding onto the bacteria, body oils, and deodorant residue that cause bad smells. Even after a normal wash, some of that buildup can stay trapped in the fibers.

That’s why your clothes may smell clean when they come out of the washer but start smelling sweaty again as soon as your body warms up. Washing them with extra detergent usually doesn’t solve the problem either. In fact, using too much detergent can leave behind a residue that makes it even easier for odors to stick around.

Fabric softener isn’t much help either. It coats the fibers, making them less breathable and less effective at wicking away moisture. If you want your activewear to last, it’s better to skip the softener and stick to the care instructions on the label.

The Simple Pre-Wash Step That Helps Eliminate Odors

One of the easiest ways to tackle lingering odors is to soak your workout clothes before putting them in the washing machine. Fill a sink or bucket with lukewarm water, add about one cup of white vinegar per gallon of water, and let the clothes soak for around 30 minutes.

This helps loosen the sweat, body oils, and detergent buildup that can stay trapped in technical fabrics. After soaking, drain the clothes and wash them as usual on a gentle cycle at 86°F (30°C) with the right amount of detergent.

Don’t overload the washing machine, as clothes need enough room for water to circulate properly. Once the cycle is over, hang everything up to dry as soon as possible. Leaving damp workout clothes sitting in the washer is one of the quickest ways for odors to come back.
