Yet, depending on the oven model, that bottom drawer may serve an entirely different purpose. Before placing another pan inside, it may be worth checking what the drawer is really intended for.

A Compartment That Doesn’t Always Serve The Same Purpose

While all ovens perform the same basic cooking function, their additional features can vary significantly. The bottom drawer is one area where manufacturers often take different approaches.

In many ovens, this compartment is indeed a storage drawer designed to hold cookware and baking accessories. It offers a convenient way to free up cabinet space while keeping frequently used items within easy reach.

Other models, however, feature a warming drawer. Rather than storing cookware, this compartment is designed to keep prepared dishes warm until they are ready to be served. This can be particularly useful during family gatherings or holiday meals when different dishes finish cooking at different times.

Some ovens, especially older gas models, use the bottom drawer as a broiler. In this case, the compartment generates direct, high heat for browning, crisping, or finishing dishes. A broiler drawer should never be used for storage.

A standard storage drawer, on the other hand, usually has no separate controls or heating settings.

Identifying the drawer’s function is more important than many people realize. Using a warming drawer for storage can expose stored items to heat and potentially damage them. The risks are even greater if the compartment is actually a broiler, where temperatures can become extremely high during operation.

What Can Be Safely Stored Inside

If the drawer is intended for storage, not every household item belongs there. Experts generally recommend storing only cookware that can safely tolerate heat generated by the oven during use.

Baking sheets, roasting pans, cast-iron cookware, oven-safe glass dishes, and ceramic bakeware are among the safest options. These materials are designed to withstand high temperatures and are unlikely to be affected by residual heat.
