We often look for complicated solutions to improve our daily lives, while some of the simplest spider-repelling tricks have been around for generations. One of them is now making a quiet comeback: placing plant pots on windowsills to keep spiders away. It might sound surprising, but it actually makes sense when you take a closer look at how nature works.

Plants That Do More Than Just Look Good

When we think about well-being, we usually focus on nutrition, fitness, or sleep. But your environment matters just as much. A clean, calm, and pleasant space can have a real impact on how you feel every day.

Some plants like mint, lavender, and basil are known for their strong scents. While these smells are enjoyable for us, they tend to be less appealing to certain insects, like spiders. Because of that, they often avoid areas where these scents are present. This simple habit, used for years, involved placing a few pots on windowsills to act as a natural barrier.

A Natural Trick That Fits A Healthy Lifestyle

More people today are trying to reduce their exposure to harsh chemicals at home. Cleaning products and insect sprays aren’t always ideal if you’re aiming for a healthier lifestyle.

That’s where this trick fits perfectly. Using natural plants helps keep your indoor space cleaner while adding a nice decorative touch. It’s simple, affordable, and aligned with a more balanced approach to everyday living.

Some of these plants also come with extra benefits. Lavender is often linked to relaxation and better sleep. Mint brings a fresh feel to a room. Basil can even be used in cooking. It’s a practical, multi-purpose setup.

3 ways to keep spiders (and other insects) out of our homes! 🕷️They enter your home for warmth and also to keep out of the sun which is why we can see them all year round! These are tips to help persuade them to go elsewhere – they’re not only easy to do but they also make my home smell amazing! 1. Add 5-10 drops of peppermint or tea tree oil to 240ml or 1 cup of water in a spray bottle and spray around your windows and doors to repel the spiders – they dislike the smell of both of these oils! 2. Place cinnamon sticks around your home – spiders also dislike the smell of cinnamon so I was quick to pop one on my bedside table! You can also do this with conkers but I chose not to do this one as it would be dangerous for my toddler! 3. Add the recommended dose of orange oil to the water for your particular mop with a squirt of dishwashing liquid. I use a Vileda spray mop so I added 15-20 drops – again spider AND insects dislike this scent but for us it’s not too over powering like peppermint and tea tree so it’s perfect for larger surfaces like your floors! 🍊 . All of these as well as lots more for other pests can be found in my book which is linked in my bio and I’ve also linked the essential oils on my ‘spider repellent’ list on my Amazon storefront which is also linked in my bio 😊 – As always please do your research when using essential oils if you have pets as not all can be used ❤️ . #cleaningaccount #cleaningtips #spiderrepellent #cleantok #cleantok101 #cleantokuk #instaclean #deepcleaning #cleaningmotivation

Why It Works… And Why It Sometimes Doesn’t

These plants can help reduce the presence of spiders, but they won’t eliminate them completely. Their effectiveness depends on several factors. The strength of the scent, the cleanliness of your home, airflow, and even where the plants are placed all play a role.

If your plant isn’t well cared for or no longer gives off a strong smell, it won’t do much. The real secret is consistency. Healthy plants, smart placement, and a clean space all work together for better results.
