Brooklyn-based ‘idea factory’, MSCHF (pronounced ‘mischief’), is back with a new and mischievous fashion project. Known for their consumer culture renditions and viral product drops, the company has created a portmanteau between Birkenstocks and Birkin bags—meet the Birkinstocks. The sandals are made in the Birkenstock silhouette with cork insoles, but the leather straps are crafted from destroyed Hermès Birkin bags. Ranging from US$24,000 to $76,000, the price of the shoes vary according to the specific Birkin bag used.
To craft the shoes, a genuine Birkin bag is disassembled and cut into the pattern of the Birkenstock straps. The leather was then assembled together with the cork footbed, rubber sole and buckles in gold vermeil. Each Birkinstock is handmade and unique. While the product is a blend between two brands, it is not a real collaboration as both Hermès and Birkenstock were not officially involved in the making.Â
