This is a year truly dedicated to the Luminor Marina as Panerai once again deconstructs and redefines the visual vocabulary of the iconic model. A successor of the historic diver’s watch from the early 1950s, the Luninor collection is now a mainstay of the brand. Its name derived from the luminous substance tritium, which was used in the second World War in lieu of the toxic Radiomir, Luminor Marina now uses the high-performance Super-LumiNova™ with its retro neon green luminescence. Of course, the model still carries Panerai’s traits. The distinct design of the dial with its sandwich construction is a tell-tale sign of the Italian design. For the latest model, the dial is presented in blue with a satiné soleil finish and is fitted with an alligator strap.
Dissecting the movement, the P.9010 calibre is only six millimetres thin with patented anti-shock technology. The automatic mechanical movement is constructed with 200 components and 31 jewels and the twin spring barrel supplying the watch with a power reserve of three days. Contributing to its visual allure, the lock protected crown towards three o’clock also has a distinctive practical function for quickly setting the hour hand, which can be moved in steps of one hour forwards or backwards while simultaneously adjusting the date display. Furthermore, keeping up with its name, the timepiece is water-resistant to 30 bar or approximately the depth of 300 metres.
