Tatler explores the Western aesthetic as the second wave of ‘cowboy core’ strikes, as seen in films such as ‘Elvis’ and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and recent collections from Louis Vuitton and Bottega Veneta

The Western aesthetic is a cornerstone of American style, rooted in the garments that came out of the frontier lifestyle and Native American influence. Leather boots, denim trousers and Stetson hats were originally worn to shield pioneers and settlers of the 19th century from the harsh climates. Other items typical of the style include prairie dresses and bloomers, and accessories such as neckerchiefs, bolo ties and woven shawls, as well as silver and turquoise jewellery.

Many of these items are still popular everyday wear, thanks to their durability and timeless appeal, and some have transcended into high fashion multiple times over the years. Cowboy boots had a hot moment in 2022 and were styled with juxtaposing garments, from mini dresses to basketball shorts. But a more traditional “cowboy core” look is surging in popularity in 2024, due in no small part to the release of Beyoncé’s latest album, Cowboy Carter and Bella Hadid flourishing in her equine era and more.

Check out how celebrities, films and luxury brands are incorporating Western themes in their style, and five ways to channel it.

Stay on theme like Beyoncé

While Beyoncé is best known for her RnB and pop hits, she is from Texas—it was only a matter of time before she released a country album. Cowboy Carter delivers, both musically, of course, but also visually. This is hardly surprising—remember the futuristic stage outfits she wore during the course of her successful Renaissance tour? Fashion always plays a role in her art.

The artist wore a snakeskin coat in Japan paired with a latex bodycon dress, opera gloves and hat—all in brown—for cowboy-coded ensemble that looked familiar yet felt fresh. Similarly, Louis Vuitton’s creative director Pharrell Williams’s Western vision for his autumn-winter 2024 menswear collection saw monochrome looks in shades of the desert, and chic applications of denim, leather, turquoise and silver on the runway.

2000s-ify the style like Bella Hadid

Bella Hadid has always enjoyed being around and riding horses, but since she started dating cowboy Adan Banuelos in October 2023, she’s dialled up her Western-influenced style to reflect her love for the animals and lifestyle. At the American Performance Horseman rodeo event last month, Hadid showed up in a sequinned, bronze, Coyote Ugly-coded “going out top” and tight leather trousers, and accessorised with a chunky silver and turquoise pendant.

Miu Miu’s autumn-winter 2024 collection is an example of how to weave Noughties style elements into traditional pieces: these medium-blue wash denim trousers with piping details down the legs reflect the Western style, while the skinny cut sets them firmly into 2000s territory.

Take notes from Baz Lurhmann’s 'Elvis'…

A rockabilly suit and boots look is quintessentially Elvis Presley, and slots right into the Western style category by way of Tennessee. And while yes, some of his on-stage looks at the height of his fame might be too decorative for everyday wear (think that bedazzled white jumpsuit), Baz Lurhmann’s depiction of the singer in his 2023 biopic included pared-down yet chic jackets and trousers in pastels and jewel tones, styled with sleek boots perfect for dancing.

To best emulate a modern take on the singer’s look, turn to Celine’s spring-summer 2024 collection which paired slim cut suits with a variety of pointed- and almond- toe boots in simple, standout leather finishes for that cool rocker flair.

…or Lana Del Rey’s stage and event style

Lana Del Rey’s music—soft, beautiful and melancholic—is complemented by the vintage Americana aesthetic that is now synonymous with her as a pop culture figure. The prairie-style dresses she often turns to for performances and events, whether mini or maxi, hark back to ’50s and ’60s silhouettes, with a touch of Southern Belle glamour. Fans have likened her style to Priscilla Presley’s, and she has adopted elements of that star, including the beehive up-do, winged eyeliner and a preference for white and pastel tones.

For a more relaxed way to wear the style, creative director Chemena Kamali’s debut collection for Chloe, autumn-winter 2024, merges prairie and bohemian styles: the high necklines, long sleeves and earthy tones feel Western, while the draping details and floaty fabrics transform them into high fashion.

Merge traditions a là ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’

Martin Scorsese’s 2023 movie Killers of the Flower Moon was a powerful depiction of the real-life events that took place in 1920s Oklahoma that involved the people of the Osage Nation. Actress Lily Gladstone plays Mollie Kyle, an affluent Indigenous woman married to Leonardo DiCaprio’s driver character Ernest Burkhart, and her clothes tell the story of her life: from her family history to status in the town. Costume designer Jacqueline West and wardrobe consultant Julie O’Keefe ensured that all elements were historically accurate, down to incorporating the colours and fringe details of real woven blankets renowned textile company Pendleton made for Osage Nation people in the 1920s.

Bottega Veneta’s autumn-winter 2024 show doesn’t reference Indigenous styles directly, but the show notes state that creative director Mattieu Blazy drew from ideas of simplicity, practicality, comfort, protection and heirlooms—notions rooted in many Native American ways of dress. This season saw boxier tops, military style jackets and lots of leather fashioned into fringe, a contemporary take on the themes of the film’s costume.
