Last year’s exposé of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein marked the beginning of the #METOO era—a defining moment that saw a unified fight against sexual harassment and assault. The sentiment was reflected strongly in this year’s Golden Globes carpet, as Hollywood’s biggest stars ditched the colourful glitz and glam for striking ensembles of all-black in powerful protest.

Bright accessories of previous years were replaced with meaningful pins of the ‘Time’s Up’ movement and red carpet dates with activists. Celebrities such as Emma Watson, Meryl Streep, and Amy Poehler were joined by figures such as Marai Larasi (director of Black-feminist network Imkaan) and Ai-Jen Poo (director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance), sparking discussion on the issue of sexual abuse not just limited to Hollywood but throughout all industries. Natalie Portman also managed a sassy swipe at the all-male director nominees she had to present awards for.

Unabashedly political and ablaze with a passion for positive change, the attendees of the 2018 Golden Globes Awards were stunning beyond compare. An absence of colour is by no means an absence of style either. Here are some of our favourite looks from this year’s “blacked-out” red carpet.

 Dakota Johnson

Gucci-girl Dakota Johnson proved that colour is not necessary when it comes to glam with this dazzling black gown. While her elegance from the front caught our eye, it was when she turned around (swipe Instagram carousel) that we found it truly difficult to look away.

Margot Robbie

Another Gucci muse, the Best Actress nominee for the motion picture I, Tonya rocked a plunging V-neckline, hammered shoulders and bold shimmering crystal embroidery at the ceremony. But then again, Margot Robbie could have worn one of those black garbage bags and still have made this list.

Saoirse Ronan

The actual winner of the Best Actress awards, Saoirse Ronan for her performance in Lady Bird, also deserves a standing ovulation for this incredibly sleek and chic futuristic ensemble.  Absolute perfection.

Emilia Clarke

While glitter is indeed eye-catching and most welcome on the red carpet, mother of dragons Emilia Clarke reminds us that it isn’t the only way to stand out with this stylish number from Miu Miu. Already effortlessly sophisticated and sexy, the Game of Thrones girl added an extra oomph to her look with a popping red lip and 29 carats of Harry Winston diamonds around her neck. All hail Khaleesi!

 Millie Bobby Brown

At only 13 years old, Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown doesn’t let her age and petiteness keep her from standing out amongst the industry veterans around her. Whimsically chic in her black double silk satin dress from Calvin Klein, she makes a strong impression, with dramatic ruffles  and a tight topknot do.

Kendall Jenner

Kendall Jenner made a grand entrance at the Golden Globes with a long-trailing haute couture high-low gown from Giambattista Valli, accenting the look with sexy Louboutins, diamond earrings and a 10-carat diamond on her pinky.

 Nicole Kidman

Oddly the A-lister’s first post on her IG account, this photo in a way sums up why Nicole is still relevant in Hollywood.

James and Dave Franco

But let’s not leave out men who dazzled in black on the red carpet, begining with the Franco brothers. Shoutout to James Franco‘s #TIMESUP pin and the sequin-infused lapels on Dave Franco‘s Saint Laurent tux, reminding us that glitter and bling aren’t only for women.

 Ansel Elgort

Ansel Elgort looks super sharp and classy in Prada, as he reunites  with former  co-star Shailene Woodley at this year’s award ceremony. Thanks for reminding us of your heartbreaking romance in The Fault of Our Stars. Cue allergies.

 The Stranger Things Gang

Mini in size but big on  impact are the rest of the young cast of Stranger Things. Is that Finn Wolfhard wearing Saint Laurent? These kids are already more fashionable than most of us will ever be in our lifetime.

Chris Hemsworth

Let’s not leave out the sweetest eye-candy of all, the crème de la crème, Chris Hemsworth. Thor may be the God of thunder, but here you have the God of  style and sexy smolders. While his smile leaves us drooling over our screens, we also take note of the classy black Etro suit that has been so thoughtfully accessorised with the #TIMESUP pin.

Actresses & Activists

Of course, amongst all the glam, here are the ones who truly won our hearts: the actresses and activists who came together to send society a message that matters. Through these influential and mighty females, we see how the red carpet can become a platform for both fashion and social issues, and how the power of entertainment can really be used to make our world a better place. Admire the sparkle adorning our beloved stars, as well as their shining passion for positive change.
