Born in Aberdeen, Scotland and living in Thailand since 2006, Richard Skene’s first exhibited in Bangkok in 2013 with a show titled, “The Road of Excess Leads to the Palace of Wisdom”. Renewing his presence in Thailand’s exciting art scene, the artist is about to debut new works at Woof Pack art space from April 26 to May 5.
Introducing three diverse new collections, “Pretty Ugly”, “Flying Colours” and “Cityscapes”, here’s what to expect from the multimedia conceptual artist:

In Eastern philosophy it is believed that everything and everyone has a dark side and light side, or yin and yang. The shadow cannot exist without the light and in “Pretty Ugly”, Skene highlights this juxtaposition through various portraits that reveal how something can be pretty on the outside yet ugly within

“Flying Colours” takes an political look at national flags, dissecting each of their geometries down to socio-economoic and geo-political implications. The stars and stripes of the USA, for instance, are featured prominently in this collection to discuss the nation’s position as a dominant world superpower, its wide political diversity and an influence that is both progressive and regressive.

Through a collection of photographs taken in a variety of global destinations, including New York, Hong Kong and Rome, the artist points to commonality amongst these widespread locations, including distinct abstract forms in the urban environments.
