It’s been over a year since the compelling Korean thriller and award-winning film Parasite was released. After conquering the Oscars with his Best Picture win, director Bong Joon-ho plans to deliver once again.
Bong explained on an episode of The Director’s Cut podcast earlier this month, “It feels like I’m splitting my brain in half left and right writing these two scripts. But I finished one last week.” Fans will be thrilled as he plans to produce not one, but two sequels to the internationally acclaimed film. Although not much information has been revealed about the plot of the two films, Bong has confirmed that one film will be written in English and the other in Korean.
“The Korean film is located in Seoul and has unique elements of horror and action, it’s difficult to define the genre of my films,” the filmmaker added.
Based on “a true event that happened in 2016,” Bong does not know where exactly the English-language project will be filmed, but he hints that it may take place in both the US and the UK. Apart from the two follow-up sequels, Bong is also working on an English-language Parasite HBO series with director Adam McKay, which is expected to utilise a few deserted ideas from the original script of the film.
While fans have many reasons to be excited, it’s still unclear when the Parasite sequels will begin filming, let alone be released to the public. Bong remains buttoned up about any clear-cut details, but according to a recent report, the odds are in favor of seeing at least one of the two screenplays in 2022 as the director’s films have been released within two years of each other.
