Esteemed fashion photographer, who was widely credited for the rise of the high fashion supermodel era has died at the age of 74, as announced on his personal Instagram account on Wednesday, which did not reveal his cause of death but noted that he is leaving a “big void”.

The German photographer was born in 1944 in what is now Poland, and has worked with many models and high fashion celebrities throughout his expansive career—from collaborations with Anna Wintour on her first American Vogue magazine cover to Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, on the September edition of British Vogue, which highlighted female activists, politicians and actors.

A statement posted to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’ Instagram on Wednesday paid tribute to Lindbergh, reading: “The Duchess of Sussex had worked with Peter in the past and personally chose him to shoot the 15 women on the cover. There is no other photographer she considered to bring this meaningful project to life.”

The prolific photographer’s work appeared in magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar and The New Yorker, where he made a name for himself for his preference of capturing models in their natural state.
