Inspired by David Bowie’s look in the Life On Mars? music video, blocking your eyes with blue shadow is an effortlessly iconic glam rock look. You wouldn’t need to do much else with the rest of your makeup and forget blending out your eye shadow—rawness is key here.  Elevate it for the ball by using a metallic or glittery blue, instead of a powdered matte.

This look is equal parts glam and equal parts rock. To achieve The Runaways’ smoulder, use only or mostly black for a dark smokey eye, not forgetting the undereye area. Accompany the drama with glowing skin, as in shimmery foundations and highlighters. Keep the lip nude or glossy and any blush concentrated to the edges of the face rather than centre.

The beauty styling in Maison Margiela’s Haute Couture Spring Summer 2016 show was a huge nod to Bowie and the glam rock era. One of the standout looks, which wasn’t necessarily something that Bowie specifically did (but perhaps he did), was the application of varying sized silver stars around one eye. This could also be a modern interpretation of KISS’ Paul Stanley’s signature star-eyed makeup. Either way, sparkly “facial applique” is an idea worth considering for the Tatler Ball. Black lip optional.

For a softer glamour look, a popular ’80s makeup trend that has been channelled by the likes of Debbie Harry, Annie Lennox and even David Bowie involves taking a pink of your choice and brushing it around your temples—from the hairline even—and blending it out towards your cheekbones and the outer corners of your eyes. It’s basically the opposite of how we typically use our blush, on the apples of our cheeks. Match this with a red lip and you’re an instant ’80s glamour babe.
