The joy and wonder of packing and unpacking are the inspiration for Issey Miyake’s spring/summer 2021 collection: Unpack the Compact. During the preparation of the last collection, head designer Satoshi Kondo saw the number of boxes that were to be shipped to Paris and came up with an idea to create a collection so compact, all the looks could fit into one box. In this series, creative and integrative ways to make garments compact such as rolling, folding, stacking and layering are explored. There are also four series packed into one season, and we’re unfurling them for you here.Â
Â
Out A Piece is characterised by the black zipper which connects together the unique design into a three-dimensional construct. Made with stretchable fabric, the series features a soft and fluffy touch. For the long jacket and the biker jacket, you can play around with the zippers to discover different ways to wear them.
This series is a merge between clothing and garment bag, where the wearer cycles between wearing, folding and carrying away the garment. The coat and poncho can be turned into bags resembling the ones used to carry suits when folded and fastened with zippers. The pants, on the other hand, come with a separate pouch that can they can be folded into. True to its name, the water- and wrinkle-resistant fabric is ideal for people who are always on the go.Â
Utilising fabric that is a blend of cotton and polyester, each look from the series is stretchable like a sponge. The elastic material greatly wraps around the body without sticking to the skin, thanks to a zigzag knit pattern. Also perfect for travels, each garment can be rolled up into a compact size.

Temporary Room was inspired by the idea of wearing a painting. Each attire is composed of pieces strung together. The paintings depict a living room, in the day time and night time. Twilled cotton and ramie are used as canvases to further enhance the minute details of the printed art piece, such as the specific colours and textures of the brush strokes.
