It’s been said that the clothes maketh the man. In the case of Rocketman, the Elton John musical starring Taron Egerton, jewellery has just as much a responsibility in evoking the flamboyant extravagance of the rock legend. His stage persona is eccentric and whimsical, and John often elevates his gender-breaking style with larger-than-life accessories (those sunglasses!) and jewellery.
To translate the look for Egerton in Rocketman, costume designer Julian Day was granted access to Chopard’s jewellery vault. It wasn’t hard to get Chopard to come onboard; after all, the company and Elton John, who is also an executive producer on Rocketman, have very close ties. For many years, Chopard has been a supporter of the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
“I was so pleased to have been able to have access to authentic pieces of jewellery to emphasise the outfits. Chopard is the ideal jeweller and watchmaker for this project – they are daring in their creativity and colourful, which was quintessential to tie in with my vision,” Day noted.
Caroline Scheufele, Chopard’s co-president and artistic director, is equally enthused about being part of this project. “Elton is a very dear friend of mine, hugely gifted in his talent, whether it’s in his music, which I absolutely love, or his style and persona. Rocketman emphasises further just how much of an inspiration he is, through his incomparable panache and story. I was delighted to participate in this movie and wanted to ensure that Chopard jewellery and watches would help transform Taron into Sir Elton John!”
