How to Maintain Your Fig Tree to Prevent Snakes
You don’t need to cut down your fig tree, but it’s important to care for it properly. By trimming back the branches, you allow more light to reach the tree. This helps prevent the interior of the tree from becoming too shaded and damp, which attracts them. Be sure to remove low-hanging branches to clear the trunk about 80 to 100 cm (32 to 39 inches) off the ground.
If left on the ground for too long, the fallen figs begin to ferment, attracting small animals. This can become a feast for the reptiles, so be sure to collect the fallen figs as soon as they drop. You can compost them in a closed bin or dispose of them far from your home.
You can also avoid using thick mulch around the base of the tree, as it can create a perfect hiding spot for snakes. Instead, opt for materials like gravel or wood chips, which are less attractive to snakes.
Choose the Right Spot for Your Fig Tree
If you haven’t planted your fig tree yet, location matters a lot. Don’t place it too close to your terrace, door, or play areas, as this could increase the chances of encountering a snake.
