And guess what? Thailand stands out as the country where couples are most likely to stray, with an impressive 51% infidelity rate! In other words, more than half of adults in Thailand admit to being unfaithful at some point in their lives. But what’s behind these numbers?
An impressive study with striking figures
Before we jump into the details, let’s take a look at the study itself. Over 23,000 people from 30 countries were surveyed over a period of 60 years about their romantic behaviors and loyalty. These aren’t random results — this is a massive database with 1.9 million data points. This means the findings provide deep insight into not just the frequency of infidelity, but also the psychological and social factors behind it.
What we learn is that several elements play a significant role in infidelity, including: economic instability, boredom in relationships, and of course, the desire for something new.

Thailand, with its shocking 51% infidelity rate, really stands out in this study. This statistic might seem shocking at first, but when you look at the local culture, things start to make more sense. In Thailand, having an additional relationship is not always seen as an act of betrayal. While it’s not entirely acceptable, there are some situations where a parallel relationship can be tolerated, or even expected, to some degree. This cultural nuance makes Thailand a unique case in the study.
Also, the emotional work in a relationship — the effort to maintain an intimate and affectionate connection — is crucial. In cases where this emotional work is lacking, infidelity becomes a way to fill that void.
Other countries with high infidelity rates
While Thailand leads the way, other countries also show high rates of infidelity. Denmark, for example, comes in second with 46%, followed by Italy and Germany at 45%. If you thought infidelity was a phenomenon that only affected certain countries, think again! Even in France, nearly 43% of people admit to cheating at some point in their lives.
What’s even more surprising is that countries like the UK, Spain, and Belgium also show relatively high rates, ranging from 36% to 40%. Why is this? Even though Western cultures promote monogamy, social pressures, emotional frustrations, or the need for “spice” in relationships can sometimes override those ideals.
Infidelity: a mix of psychology and socio-economic context
Looking at the results from a different angle, it’s interesting to note that infidelity often links to psychological and social factors. Researchers explain that in times of economic instability (such as in poorer or highly unequal regions), infidelity rates tend to rise. Why? Because anxiety and stress caused by financial worries might lead some people to seek emotional comfort or power elsewhere.
And it’s not just about money. Monotony and lack of communication in relationships are also key factors driving infidelity. Many people feel lonely or neglected within their relationships, pushing them to look for excitement or validation outside. It’s a bit of a vicious cycle: when love fades, the temptation for novelty becomes stronger.
