Bangkok’s art scene is wasting no time this year, as the metropolis is once again playing host to the highly anticipated Galleries’ Night this weekend. Starting today on Friday, as usual the art hop begins on the Sathorn-Charoenkrung side of town and will commence on Saturday night with Sukhumvit galleries and art spaces.
Though you have a few hours each night to hit as many venues as possible, with over 50 galleries in the city taking part in this event, realistically you’re not going to be able to see them all. So from one art afficianado to another, here’s my personal selection for Friday’s gallery hoppin’. Stay tuned for a Saturday list.
Bangkok Citycity Gallery
Show: SOS Souled Out Studios
Why see it? It’s a group exhibition featuring a favourite of mine, Alex Face, among nine other Thai and international street artists. I’m also excited to see the works of UK artist Lucas Price, whom I’ve met but haven’t quite experienced the works of.
Galleries’ Night Hours: 6-11pm
The Jam Factory
Show: The Printers’ Prints
Why see it? A collaboration between Bangkok print studio The Archivist and Berlin counterpart Le Raclet, this event celebrates both cities’ local screen print works. You also get the chance to try your hand at printing at the event.
GN Hours: 7-11pm
The Ferry Gallery
Show: The Ferry Gallery
Why see it? Have you ever seen an art installation on a ferry on the Chao Phraya? Well there’s your answer. The Ferry Gallery will travel back and forth among four piers—Oriental, Sathor, The Jam Factory and Si Praya—so plan wisely for this one!
GN Hours: 7-10:30pm
Speedy Grandma
Show: Angkrit Ajchariyasophon : Angkrit Gallery Bangkok
Why see it? The art-scene-eminent Angkrit is bringing to life his vision of the ideal gallery, which will also feature works from artists he has worked with in the past. There’s a special performance by Taweesak Molsawat at 9pm.
GN Hours: until midnight
Project 189 BKK
Show: L’Autre Regard
Why see it? A co-exhibition between two well-traveled female photographers, Nana Chen and Gabriele Harhoff, I’m interested to see how they depict Thailand or Southeast Asia—the subject of their photography—as women and as foreigners. Also, Nana’s topic of Thai transgenders is particularly fascinating.
GN Hours: 5-11pm
New-Territories
Show: tomorrow_n(h)ow show – 2.0
Why see it? Honestly, I don’t know what to expect. But taking the book by its cover, this looks like it involves a deal of perversion, machines and obscure things left up to intepretation and that’s enough to get me there.
GN Hours: until midnight
MOST Gallery
Show: The Secret of Skin
Why see it? An introspective nude photography exhibition by yet another female photographer—Sophirat Muangkum—I’m looking forward to an alternative message expressed through nudes.
GN Hours: 6-9pm
