Babies are at an even higher risk. The FDA specifically says you should never heat breast milk or baby formula in the microwave. Studies show that microwaving milk can create really hot spots that could burn a baby’s mouth or throat.

How To Safely Heat Liquids In The Microwave

To avoid these risks, make sure to follow the instructions from your microwave’s manufacturer. For example, LG recommends stirring the liquid before heating it, and then stirring again halfway through to make sure it heats evenly. Once the microwave stops, wait a few seconds before taking the cup out, then stir again to check if it’s safe to drink.

Some brands suggest putting a metal spoon in the middle of the cup to help heat the liquid evenly. The metal helps spread the microwave waves better. But be careful, leave at least 2 cm between the spoon and the walls of the microwave to avoid any sparks.

When using the microwave, it’s essential to know what foods and items are safe to heat. Common foods like leftovers, soups, and vegetables are perfect for the microwave. You can easily reheat cooked chicken, pasta, or rice, as well as cook or steam vegetables in just a few minutes. Microwave-safe containers made of glass or ceramic are ideal for these tasks.

Be sure to cover the food to prevent it from drying out, and stir it halfway through to ensure even heating. Also, foods like potatoes, popcorn, and certain desserts can be quickly heated without any issues.
