Jaspal X Karl Lagerfeld

The most exciting event last week was one related to fashion—the collaboration between Karl Lagerfeld and Jaspal. This innovative brand is one of the few local labels that think beyond borders and the only one that has featured international supermodels from Cindy Crawford to Kate Moss and Alexa Chung in its commercial campaigns. Now it has managed to get the design icon behind top labels like Fendi, Chanel and his own eponymous brand to create the Karl Lagerfeld for Jaspal collection.

Jaspal X Karl Lagerfeld [Continued]

According to Jaspal’s Viseth Singhsachathet, it took more than a year and a half to get the designer to agree. Although the man himself could not be at the launch at Siam Paragon, he sent his long-time head of communications and right-hand woman Caroline Lebar. Clothes and accessories marked with his signature face silhouette and that of his cat, Chopette, were unveiled on the runway to an enthusiastic gathering. With prices starting from 695 baht to 5,995 baht for the most expensive (the jackets), this collection will enable Thai fashionistas to grab Karl Lagerfeld designs at a very affordable price. Hurry and get there before the items are all gone!

From France To Indonesia

Another fashion event of a different type was the presentation of the Indonesian Batik Foundation by the Indonesian Embassy and the Indonesian Women's Association. Held at ambassador Ahmad Rusdi's residence, it was a total cultural experience, starting with a Saman dance followed by a performance of the kolintang and angklung musical instruments. The fashion show featured two sets of chic and very wearable designs based on batik fabric. All this ended with a feast of Indonesian cuisine for lunch. In addition to ambassadors' wives, it looked like most of the members of women's clubs in Bangkok were there.

Beauty Events

L'Oreal Paris held Cannes Beyond the Red Carpet at Siam Paragon to introduce the Boyish Charm collection. This is the look that brand ambassador Araya Hargate will be presenting at the Cannes Film Festival this week. Lancome also unveiled an additional 12 shades to the existing 12 of its Teint Idole Ultra Wear liquid foundation, giving Thai ladies lots of choices to suit every skin tone. The event at Eve and Boy at Siam Square One was also held to present the Lancome counter at the multi-brand shop. There were also launches for Neal’s Yard Remedies’ Frankincense Lift serum and cream at Central Ladprao and Laura Mercier’s Velour lipstick at W Bangkok, but I had to skip both of them due to other engagements.

R-Haan For Dinner

One of these other engagements was dinner at R-Haan, which of course, means food in Thai. This is the new restaurant of celebrity chef Chumpol Jangprai and Piti Bhirombhakdi on Thonglor. In a beautiful setting tastefully decorated with Thai handicrafts, Chumpol uses local ingredients sourced from their origins to dish up tasting menus that take diners on a journey around the country. The chef has been behind efforts to elevate Thai cuisine to fine dining levels and his latest restaurant is a showcase of the best in this very popular culinary offering.

Dinner & Superheroes

Another dinner I attended was held at a cinema. What? Ah, but this was not at any ordinary movie hall, but the GSB Infinite Enigma at Paragon Cineplex. This is a super luxurious screening theatre with 34 fully reclinable sofa beds and 360-degree surround sound plus personal butler. The private foyer boasts a bar and is large enough for a long table seating 20 people for an elegant meal. This is where we had dinner hosted by Nithi Pattanapakdi, Major Cineplex’s chief media officer, with catering by the group’s Vie Hotel. Following the dinner was the screening of the new blockbuster The Avengers: Infinity War, which I could not stay for but I did get to have my picture taken with Captain America, Ironman and Black Panther.

Weekly Watch Watching

In between all this running around I was able to squeeze in a stop at the St Regis bar for Bulgari’s 2018 watch collection first presented at Baselworld. Bulgari’s international communications director Pascal Brandt and communications director for Southeast Asia Teo Sze Lin, as well as Thailand marketing manager Anan Petdachai, were there to present the new timepieces. I don’t like chunky watches, so was quite taken by the Octo Finissimo line which are among the world’s slimmest complication watches.

Sunday Brunch

My week ended the way it should, with a long, relaxing Sunday brunch. Pesca Mar & Terra Bistro on Ekamai has launched a brunch that runs from 11am-6pm. From a seafood bar and roast station to a room full of cheese and cold cuts, you can stuff yourself on excellent choices washed down by Pernod’s Jacob’s Creek and Campo Viejo wines. Pernod Ricard wine ambassador Darcy Wilkosz joined the ladies and kept us entertained during the lunch.
