Louis Vuitton is usually either a hit or miss. Some find its classic pattern on original luggage and handbag silhouettes iconic and classy, while others can find the same thing to be too commonplace in today’s world and thus increasingly distasteful. On the flip side, when LV modernises it tends to go to the extremes, alienating fans of the classic while appealing to fanbases of alternative subcultures and brands, like Supreme. Which is why I think Louis Vuitton’s latest innovation, a collaboration with fashion industry legend and apparent cat lover Grace Coddington, finally gets it right for the integrity of the brand.
From a distance, the collection looks like an LV collection. The palette is rooted in that iconic brown colour and signature brand print. Silhouettes seem timeless with rectangular or occasionally round shaped purses and handbags at varying practical sizes. Zoom in, however, and you’ll find the collection to be much more full of zest.
… and cute pets.
The creative director of Vogue brings her love of cats (and dogs) to the brand in a way that’s subtle and whimsical enough to render itself irresistible to LV fans who have their own fondness for kitty-cats and Fifis.
Find the Louis Vuitton signature print tastefully invaded by cute illustrated motifs and renamed by Grace “the Catogram”. From keyholders to clothing sets, each of the pieces in the collection makes a statement on its own and can also be easily aggregated for a chic total-look effect, as persuaded by the collection’s adorable campaign clips. Also, the Converse-style high-top sneakers and the platform desert-style boots are unexpected upgrades we never knew we wanted until just now.
