From copies of our "Chinatown bags" to a luxury version of IKEA's blue "Frakta" bag, Balenciaga has built itself an ironic reputation in the world of high fashion. But one of the Spanish fashion house's most outrageous parodies in recent history was designer Crocs.
Crocs, a shoe we simply cannot fathom approval of—not even on children, who can get away with most things—have been a longstanding fashion controversy on its own. So it was only a matter of time before Crocs would fall prey (or more accurately, partnership) to Balenciaga's sense of humour.
Last year at its SS18 showcase, Balenciaga unveiled to the world designer Crocs: platformed and decked out with original add-on charms. Three months later, they finally went on presale yesterday on Barney's online store for $850 a pair. Stocks never lasted past midday. Both colour offerings, pink and tan, were sold out in less than 24 hours.
Now we'll just have to wait and see them crop up on Instagram to identify the Balenciaga-Croc-crazed fans. And for those of you who are disappointed you couldn't snatch one in time, don't worry. It's just our personal suspicion that this wasn't the only opportunity to pick up on designer Crocs. We know for sure that Balenciaga had several shades of them in last year's show. In any case, it won't be long until Balenciaga's on its new mission to troll the fashion world.
