Good news for foreign film enthusiasts this month—the River City Bangkok Film Club is back this year with a slightly altered format. In 2019, RCB Film Club is ready to satisfy cinephiles with a screening every month, and opening this year's club on March 16 is Indian film English Vinglish by director Gauri Shinde.
English Vinglish revolves around the life of an Indian housewife named Shashi. Day after day, Shashi carries out her typical routine of caring for her household and making traditional sweets called laddus. She never experiences the need to learn English until she goes to New York for her niece’s marriage. Finding herself stuck in awkward situations, she decides to enroll in a short-term English course. There, she meets characters from different backgrounds, including one who seems attracted to her.
English Vinglish was female director Gauri Shinde's big debut in the film industry, having worked in advertising previously. The film won prizes at the Toronto International Film Festival and was a huge box-office hit in India. English Vinglish also stars late Indian actress Sridevi Kapoor, who was celebrated for her choreographic skills in addition to acting. This film was Kapoor's comeback after a 15-year hiatus. Passed away just last year, Sridevi has been in more than 200 films in her career.
Supported by the Indian Embassy, the RCB Film Club screening of English Vinglish on Saturday, March 16 will be attended by Indian Ambassador HE Suchitra Durai, who will also introduce the film. Afterwards, there will be a reception with Indian wine and snacks, so don't miss out. The screening and reception will take place at the RCB Forum on level 2 of River City Bangkok at 4pm sharp. Admission, as always, is free.
