Roberto Cavalli, the legendary Italian designer, passed away last April 12. He was known for his distinct style savoir-faire and penchant for loud prints
The daily bustle of the fashion world came to a sudden halt last April 12 when Italian designer Roberto Cavalli’s passing at the age of 83 was announced. Cavalli was known for his affinity towards the extravagant and flamboyant and brought wild patterns and excessiveness to mainstream couture. He championed feline prints and sultry silhouettes and earned himself a reputation as a celebrity designer. His clients included Victoria Beckham, Naomi Campbell, and Aishwarya Rai, to name a few.
Cavalli first arrived on the fashion scene in 1970 when he launched his namesake brand. Around the same time, he patented a printing technique on leather and suede and, at 30, debuted his first collection at the Salon for Prêt-à-Porter in Paris.
“... From humble beginnings in Florence, Roberto succeeded in becoming a globally recognised name loved and respected by all. Naturally talented and creative, Roberto believed that everyone can discover and nurture the artist within themselves,” read his brand’s official statement on his death, posted on its Instagram page.
Cavalli’s legacy leaves an indelible mark on the fashion industry. We remember Cavalli’s trademark flair through some of his most memorable works below.

Aaliyah & Bretman Rock at the MTV Video Music Awards
Though R&B singer Aaliyah was known throughout the Nineties for her taste in streetwear, she donned this tiger-striped Roberto Cavalli gown at the 2000 MTV VMAs. The ensemble featured a feathered hem and a thigh split.
Over two decades later—at the same awards show—Bretman Rock wore the same gown in tribute to Aaliyah, pairing the look with vinyl thigh-high boots.
